Here we recommend rums that have been sweetened with the addition of aged sugar syrup, sweet wines or other sweetening agents to round off the rum’s flavour. Europe allows a maximum of 20grms of sugar per litre of alcohol to be added to rum.
Ron Abuelo (literally 'Grandfather's rum in Spanish) is distilled from fermented molasses at the family owned Varela Hermanos distillery in Panama. This light bodied rum, distilled in a twin column still, is aged in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels for an average of seven years. The distillery is one of the few in the world that grow their own sugar cane.
Serving Suggestions: This rum is perfect for high balls or long drinks as it is light & fruity and works well with tonic water, soda and ginger ale. If Mojito’s are your style of drink then Abuelo 7 is the perfect base.
The 7 Años opens with a slight sweetness on the nose, followed by light aromas that conjure floral notes, dry grass and hints of dry sherry. Aromatic hints of mixed nuts and coconut announce a palate that starts with some heat and evolves into a blend of light fruit, caramel and vanilla. The medium sweet, long finish introduces some cedar, medium dry sherry and spice before tapering off into burnished leather.
