The UK is the motherland of gin, and remains its biggest producer. While gin is often believed to be a quintessentially English spirit, there many excellent gins made throughout the nation.
Makar is produced by The Glasgow Distillery Co, which opened in the Scottish city in 2014. The gin is distilled seven times in a copper pot still and contains seven botanicals that are typically found in London Dry gins, including cassia bark, coriander seed and angelica root. Makar may not play around with jazzy flavours, but it is a beautifully balanced, rounded product. One for those who like true, uncompromising, juniper-fuelled gin.
Suggested serves: A simple G&T with Indian tonic, garnished with either dried juniper berries or a slice of ginger peel. Alternatively, swap the tonic for ginger ale to create an equally refreshing Gin Buck – just be sure to use heaps of ice and a good squeeze of lemon or lime juice.
Earthy juniper hits the nose first, followed by rose petals, thyme, fresh coriander and cut grass. Warm and dry palate with flavours of ginger, star anise, licorice and pine complemented by a bright, clean menthol note. This gin has balance in abundance.
