Sugarcane Juice Rum
Most Rums are made from molasses, a by-product of making sugar. But in this section, we highlight a selection of exceptional Rums made from fresh sugarcane juice. Less than 5% of the worlds production of rum is made this way and the process yields a dramatically different product.
La Rhumerie de Chamarel is located on the African island of Mauritius, situated several hundred miles east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The distillery cultivates its own sugarcane thus creating estate rums. The freshly harvested sugarcane is transferred to the distillery within 4 hours of being cut to preserve its freshness and aromas. This Pure Cane Rum is a blend Column Still and pot still rums. Each Rum is aged separately for 4 to 6 years in American Oak Barrels & French Oak Barrels.
Serving Suggestions: Chamarel VSOP is perfect neat, on the rocks with a twist of orange peel or with your favourite mixer. In an Old-Fashioned cocktail, the rum truly shines, especially in a “Treacle” style of cocktail adding fresh apple juice to a traditional rum old fashion cocktail.
Tasting Notes
Initial aromas of light vanilla pods, toffee, orange oils, lemon peels and oak. The taste starts with a complex harmony of spices and dried fruits, then notes of vanilla, smooth oak, orange, pepper and clove. The finish is medium and dry, with tropical fruits, white pepper, dried oak with a touch of warm liquorice and aniseed.
