The One and Only Singapore Sling Recipe

The One and Only Singapore Sling Recipe

When it comes to exotic cocktails, there are few as compelling as the Singapore Sling. Widely regarded as the national drink of the South-Asian country it owes its name to, the Singapore Sling is a drink with a rich history and a fruity flavour. Find out more about one of Asia’s most famous cocktails and learn how to mix an authentic one from the comfort of your home. Whoever said you have to leave your home bar to experience the world? Not us!

The History of the Singapore Sling

Many notable names have enjoyed a Singapore Sling over time, including Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling. With such notable storytellers amongst its list of fans, there’s no doubt that this is a cocktail with its own tale to tell.

Though the exact details are much disputed, it’s widely accepted that the Asian cocktail found its origins at Raffles Hotel. Fun fact: the original hotel still functions today, and, yes, it still serves Singapore Slings!

Raffles Hotel was (and is) a prestigious spot for the fashionable men and women of Singapore in the early 1900s. For women, it was a refuge from judging eyes in a society where drinking anything other than strong tea was deemed undignified. In 1915, Haitian barman Ngiam Tong Boon created the drink for the women at the bar, and it quickly became an acceptable cocktail for a public tipple.

What Is a Singapore Sling?

With such a history, it’s easy to forget that there’s more to a Singapore Sling than its story! There’s a reason, though, why this cocktail hasn’t just endured time but has flourished, becoming a popular drink across the world. This gin-based long drink is boozy but balanced, with a citrusy twist underlined by a botanical, herbal depth. If you want to know more about how it tastes, our recommendation is to follow our One and Only Singapore Sling Recipe below!

The Perfect Singapore Sling Recipe

To craft the perfect Singapore Sling, just like they do at Raffles, you’ll need:

30ml Gin
15ml Cherry liqueur
7.5ml Dom Benedictine
7.5ml Cointreau
10ml Grenadine
Dash of Bitters
15ml Lime juice
120ml Pineapple juice

To make the cocktail is simple: combine all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker along with ice and shake. Strain into a long glass and serve with a maraschino cherry and a slice of pineapple.

What Gin Should You Use In a Singapore Sling?

Any unflavoured Gin will work well in a Singapore Sling. If you’re looking for a more alcoholic cocktail, we recommend Elephant Gin, which is a nice 45% ABV and has a beautiful citrusy zing. Chase GB Gin is slightly less alcoholic at 40% ABV and has a more typical botanical palette with a fresh kick of cucumber. We’d recommend steering clear of dark gins, which can be too heavy for a Singapore Sling; if you’re new to the cocktail, try opting for something smooth and simple, like Berry Bros No 3 London Dry Gin
